If you are still talking about what you did yesterday…
you haven’t done much today.

As great as past achievements may make you feel, they pale in comparison to what you’re capable of doing today. It’s only natural to dwell on our previous accomplishments because they make us feel good about ourselves and what we have done. It makes us feel like a winner again. We can remember the glory of the battle, the challenges we overcame during the journey and we radiate with pride when we can say, “I did that.” That’s all wonderful, but the very next words out of your mouth should be, “What will I do next?”

Instead of patting yourself on the back with memories of what you’ve accomplished in the past, you can choose to make it your goal to continue growing, evolving and producing ever greater works. Once you start doing this, you’ll probably be surprised that you rarely feel compelled to look back at your past accomplishments. Why? Because you’ll be in the heat of the race and too busy being productive! Like an old country friend of mine used to say, “A dog in the hunt, don’t know he got fleas”.

Rather than dwelling on your past success, let it fuel your next project. Your accomplishments can offer something else of value besides a feeling of pride: it can offer you the confidence to try something new! Sometimes we let our past accomplishments do nothing more than serve as an excuse not to do anything more. Sometimes it is the fear of not being able to top a previous victory or we simply don’t want to try, and decide it’s safer to maintain the status-quo and bask in the afterglow. Ridiculous!

Let the excitement about your next endeavor get you fired up. Let it quicken your step and give you the exhuberance as you get ready for your next phase of growth. As exciting as your past achievements may have been, they cannot hold a candle to what you will do today! Someday when you have achieved your goals and created the future you and your family deserve, THEN you can look back and be proud of all you accomplished. Until then, you’re not nearly done yet. You’ve got mountains to climb, fears to face, doubts to overcome, and astounding achievements waiting to be realized. Go get to it!
